"Tony and I have been married for 16 years and for most of those years, have struggled in getting on the same page with our finances. Bit-by-bit, our ongoing disagreements in how to spend and save money was destroying the trust and security in our marriage. At our lowest point, we owed $75K on a home equity line of credit, had two kids in college, a car loan, mortgage, no savings and I was unemployed.
At that critically low point, I moved to live and work in Minneapolis for 3 years while Tony lived and worked in Illinois to help get us back on track in our finances and in our marriage. It wasn't until we started attending Retrouvaille that we realized we couldn't heal our troubles or build trust to create a strong marriage on our own. We needed to invite God to be part our marriage. We didn't have a church home and so we searched to find a church that worked for the both of us. Tony was raised Catholic and I was raised Lutheran and Immanuel Lutheran Church seemed to work for both of us. It was at Immanuel, where we found out about Financial Peace University and decided to go to that class, even though it was 1/2 way through the program. From the very first FPU class, Tony and I suddenly realized, this program was exactly what we needed to provide us hope and a plan to end our communication struggles and financial issues forever! We quickly caught up in on all the FPU lessons and then volunteered to teach the FPU classes at Immanuel. In just a few short years, our marriage is now the best it has ever been and in July 2014, we made our last payment on our mortgage. WE ARE 100% DEBT FREE!
